Bunion surgery
If conservative treatment does not provide relief, we will suggest surgical intervention. Knowing what caused the bunion is essential for choosing the best procedure to help ensure correction without recurrence. The most common surgical procedure to relieve pain and restore normal joint alignment is bunionectomy. Our podiatric surgeons may also use pins, wires and screws to stabilize a severely deformed joint.

Heel surgery
While many causes of heel pain can be treated effectively without surgery, there are cases that require surgical solutions. When surgery is necessary for heel and arch pain relief, we can perform minimally invasive procedures utilizing endoscopes and electrosurgical debridement. These procedures allow patients to return to daily activities much faster than traditional surgery.
One of the most common conditions that require surgery to the heel is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the fibrous band of tissue in the bottom of the foot that extends from the heel bone to the toes. Another condition that may require surgery is heel spurs, which often result from stress on the muscles and fascia of the foot. Surgery may be the best option to correct chronic heel pain.

Ankle surgery
While immobilization heals most broken bones, surgery may be required to correct a serious deformity of the ankle and its bone structure. Injuries, birth defects and normal wear and tear throughout the course of life often cause ankle deformities. Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and neuromuscular conditions can cause high-risk ankle deformities as well. This can result in pain, difficulty walking and wounds. We may recommend the following:
- Ankle arthrodiastasis
- Joint salvage
- Joint implant replacement
- Bone lengthening
- Internal or external fixation
- Advanced arthroscopic & endoscopic procedures

Healing after surgery
Many foot surgeries require patients to have their foot immobilized after the procedures with a bandage, splint, surgical shoe, cast or open sandal. Depending on the specific condition, we may encourage patients to perform light exercises or take physical therapy to speed their recovery. After sufficient healing time, most patients can resume wearing their usual footwear. In addition, many patients need additional therapy or treatments after surgery in order to aid in the healing and recovery process. These may include physical therapy, orthotic devices and/or special footwear.

Orthotics, braces & shoes
At Step Lively Foot & Ankle Centers, we offer a complete selection of orthoses to correct abnormal or irregular gait patterns. Orthoses or braces can help people stand, walk and run more efficiently and comfortably. We also stock a large variety of orthopaedic shoes that can be fitted, along with custom-made orthotics.
We sometimes prescribe orthoses to correct an abnormal gait. We also custom-make and fit orthotics to patients immediately following surgery. Orthotic devices come in many shapes, sizes and materials and fall into three main categories: rigid orthoses to control function; soft orthoses that absorb shock, increase balance and take pressure off uncomfortable or sore spots; and semi-rigid orthoses to provide foot balance for walking or participating in sports.
We encourage, honor and welcome your foot and ankle surgical referrals.
