Diabetic Foot Problems

Diabetes affects millions of Americans as the incidence of this disease continues to rise to epidemic proportions. People with diabetes are less likely to be aware of foot injuries because of damage to the nerve endings and blood vessels associated with the disease, so even minor scrapes and cuts can become ulcerated or develop an infection. Proper diabetic foot care can prevent many of these problems.

At Step Lively Foot & Ankle Centers in the Greater Columbus, Ohio area, our board-certified, skilled, experienced podiatrists work with patients on education and prevention, diagnosis and treatment, fitting appropriate orthoses and braces, and surgical reconstruction. Our goal is to work with newly diagnosed patients to prevent more serious complications. We encourage our diabetic patients to come in regularly, which enables us to monitor and notice even small changes in foot structure that may signal major problems. This kind of care can prevent more serious problems from developing.

We treat diabetic foot problems such as diabetic neuropathy, calluses, foot and ankle ulcers and wounds, poor circulation and Charcot foot. Step Lively Foot & Ankle Centers are authorized Medicare suppliers for the Diabetic Shoe Program, which provides for high quality shoes and up to three pairs of removable protective shoe inserts per calendar year. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association and the American Diabetes Association, good, conservative footwear can prevent foot amputations. More than half of the amputations performed could have been prevented by proper, timely footwear.
